Meet the Herd
Most dairy goat herds follow a naming theme for their registered names, and many producers also incorporate the annual letter that is designated by the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) into their goats’ tattoos.
At Dawnridge, our naming tradition blends both—each kid is named after an iconic song title that matches the ADGA letter for their birth year. Any Dawnridge animal born in 2023, for example, carries a song title beginning with R, since 2023 was the R year. For example, the name Dawnridge Rikki Don’t Lose, was inspired by the Steely Dan song “Rikki Don’t Lose My Number.”
In addition to registered names, every herd is assigned a unique herd tattoo by ADGA and is used for the animal’s permanent identification. Our whimsical herd tattoo is GØAT (the O is a zero). This tattoo appears in the right ear, while the individual animal’s birth order and birth year letter are placed in the left ear, following ADGA guidelines.
Luckily, our herd is small enough that we don’t run out of good song titles too quickly—though we know 2027, the X year, might require a little extra creativity!
